Long-Term Health Effects of Smoking

Lung Cancer 

  • 90% of lung cancer deaths in Singapore occur among smokers

Heart Disease 

  • This is the main cause of death in Singapore.
  • Studies show that about 40% of deaths due to heart disease before age of 65 years are related smoking.

Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis 

  • Smoking is the main cause of chronic bronchitis
  • Smoking narrows air passage and destroys lung air sacs, making breathing difficult

For Women 

  • Increased risk of cervical and breast cancers
  • Painful and irregular menstruation
  • Higher chance of miscarriages, stillborn births and lower weight babies

For Men 

  • Smokers in their 30's and 40's are 50% more likely to suffer from impotence or erectile dysfunction
  • Smoking also reduces volume of ejaculation, lowers sperm counts and distorts sperm shape
  • Shortness of breath and reduced stamina
